Eczema
(Atopic Dermatitis)

What even is eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition characterized by inflammation and intense itching. It is a common condition that affects people of all ages, but it is more prevalent in infants and young children.

What does it look like?

Eczema can manifest as red, dry, and itchy patches on the skin. In severe cases, the affected areas may become thickened, cracked, and prone to infection. The condition often occurs in “flare-ups,” where symptoms worsen periodically, followed by periods of remission.

How can you get it?

The exact cause of eczema is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. People with eczema often have a hypersensitive immune system, leading to an overreaction to certain triggers, such as irritants, allergens, stress, temperature changes, or hormonal fluctuations.

Treatments?

Treatment for eczema aims to alleviate symptoms, reduce inflammation, and prevent flare-ups. This may involve a combination of self-care measures and medical interventions. Self-care measures include avoiding triggers, maintaining proper skin hygiene, using gentle moisturizers, wearing soft fabrics, and managing stress. Medical interventions may include topical corticosteroids, immunomodulators, oral antihistamines, or antibiotics to treat infections.
